For quality control, the thermal, optical, dielectric and mechanical properties of
diamond disks prepared at the IAF are routinely assessed.
Thermal conductivity measurements are performed using a laser flash
technique. The absorption at 10.6 µm – an important parameter for
the application as high-power CO2 laser window – is
analyzed using an IR laser calorimeter. Dielectric losses in the
microwave regime are analyzed in cooperation with the
Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. They apply a hemispherical Fabry-Perot
resonator for spatially resolved tan d
measurements at 145 GHz. Finally the thickness homogeneity, surface
flatness and smoothness, phase purity and mechanical strength are
analyzed.
